Prepare for university entry: UWA Smart Start

If you didn’t complete Year 12 TEE, don’t have qualifications for university entry, or would like to prepare for university studies, UWA Smart Start may be the program for you.

Based on UWA’s successful Aboriginal Orientation Program, it is open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people over 18 and has no tuition fees. The course will help you develop the skills needed for successful university study and prepare you for the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) and/or UWA Maths Competency Test.

General information

Study options

You have the option of studying on a full-time or part-time basis. Units will be offered in social science, mathematics and science.

Eligibility

Australian or New Zealand citizens or holders of an Australian permanent resident visa who are turning 18 may apply. The selection process involves attending an interview and completing some exercises to determine your current level of skills and knowledge.

Cost

As this is an enabling course, it is exempt from HECS and other tuition fees. Students will be supplied with course readers and module workbooks at minimal costs.

University options

You can apply for entry into a number of university degrees. The Albany Centre offers complete bachelor degrees in arts, science, commerce and education in Albany. Or you can start a degrees in arts, health science and a variety of other science areas and finish them in Perth.

The application process

The application process involves a brief information session about the program, a short discussion with UWA Smart Start staff and a skills assessment. This process takes about two hours.
